February 2, 2021: Local swap sows a love of seed sharing

Winnipeg, February 2, 2021 – Winnipeg Seedy Saturday is excited to offer free seeds to Winnipeg gardeners in 2021. Due to the unusual circumstances Winnipeggers are currently facing, the seed swapping event format has been restructured this year to accommodate current Manitoba COVID-19 safety guidelines.

“Spring is just around the corner and for gardeners that means the beginning of a new season of planning, planting, lending, sharing, harvesting and preserving,” said Winnipeg Seedy Saturday spokesperson Mick Manfield. “The event committee strongly believes in the power of collecting and distributing free seeds in these unprecedented times. By changing the format of the event, Seedy Saturday remains the perfect opportunity to share your love of seeds.”

The seed swap will take place in three phases this year:

Phase 1 – Seed collection from donors through designated sites around Winnipeg
Monday, January 25 – Friday, February 12

Phase 2 – Online seed ordering through the Seedy Saturday webpage
Monday, February 15 – Thursday, February 25

Phase 3 – Safe distribution of ordered seeds
Saturday, February 27

“We had to find a way to continue the tradition of helping local gardeners kick-start their year with the seed swap portion of the annual event even though our usual garden workshops and film screenings are postponed until 2022,” Manfield added. “Whether you are a novice or an expert, gardening is a safe, healthy outdoor activity that helps people develop new skills as well as a fun way to learn about nature and science by growing your own food.”

The Winnipeg Seedy Saturday seed swap is organized by SeedChange (formerly USC Canada), Canadian Mennonite University and Gardens Manitoba. For up-to-date information on the event and how you can participate visit www.gardensmanitoba.com/seedysaturday
